Why just girls?

To find her own voice, a girl must hear that voice above the noise and know that her voice is being heard. A key study of co-education environments has shown that girls are called upon less, receive less feedback and have lower self-esteem than boys*. When girls are not heard, when their voices are drowned out by others, they become invisible and their confidence and achievement levels plummet.

The founding premise of The Girls' Middle School is that girls' experiences during these years form the basis for their futures in high school, higher education and life. By offering them a safe yet challenging academic and social environment, GMS provides opportunities for girls to:

  • Study nontraditional subjects such as computer science, woodshop and engineering.
  • Develop leadership skills.
  • Explore friendships and other relationships with more support and less peer pressure.
  • Expand their view of the range of life options available to women.
  • Build a healthier and more appropriate view of their bodies, their minds and their potential.

"All-girls settings seem to provide girls a certain comfort level that helps them develop greater self-confidence and broader interests, especially as they approach adolescence"
