6th Grade Art

Course Description:

The art program at GMS integrates fine art and media arts (photography, digital imaging and video production) as well as media literacy.  The art program in 6^th grade is designed to expose students to a range of styles, techniques and materials while building their skills and confidence as creative artists. We begin the year exploring different styles of art making, moving into learning basic skills to start understanding concepts of realism and then move on to Photography, where students master the basic skills necessary to create images using digital cameras. We complete the year with a unit on media literacy where we not only analyze how information is presented in the media, but also how to create our own media messages.

Philosophy

Making art is a joyful activity. Often, self-criticism can interfere with that joy, especially during adolescence, when a child is developing their image of themselves as an artist. My primary goal for my students is for art to remain a joyful experience through adolescence and throughout life.  I believe that a curriculum that includes a balance between critical skills and a supportive environment is key to keeping art making a positive experience. In my program, while we learn how to analyze images, the emphasis is on exploring new media, building skills and confidence, and developing personal vision. An environment where each girl feels the freedom to express her own creativity without fear of judgment is essential to building a positive self-image as an artist. The girls learn that every artist has a unique perspective and each will express her view of the world in a unique way.  The art program at GMS provides both skills and confidence for girls to appreciate and enjoy making art throughout their lives.
