6th Grade Computer Science
Course Goals:
By the end of 6th grade, students will be able to
- use a logical problem-solving method
- use computer applications to complete assigned tasks
- feel some comfort and confidence in their use of computers
- demonstrate knowledge of current information technologies
Course Content
Sixth grade computer science introduces the subject primarily through understanding applications and solving problems.
Introduction to Computing at GMS
- Learning to log in and use the computers
- Appropriate use
- Internet Safety
Animation
- History of Animation
- Simple animations
- Storytelling with computers
HTML
- Students create a basic web page by hand
- Content is based on research guided by Walter related to science topics
Problem Solving
Logical problem solving methodology based on the Action-based Problem Solving curriculum from the Future Problem Solving Program
Hardware
Students will get to take a computer apart and learn about the parts

Michelle worked as a system administrator at Indiana University and GMS before transitioning into teaching computer science. She chairs the Equity committee and is Vice President of the board of the Computer Science Teachers Association.
