6th Grade Humanities

Course Description:

Sixth Grade Humanities, a course that integrates Language Arts with Social Studies, explores world cultures and literature through the central theme of Journeys.  Students become world travelers as they study geography, history, cultures, and current events related to each of the seven continents and read literature that highlights physical and personal journeys.  Students develop their writing through exposure to a variety of genres including: journal entries, poetry, narrative and expository writing, and responses to literature.  Field trips are woven into the curriculum as valuable opportunities for students to connect their learning to the world outside the classroom.

Philosophy

Sixth Grade Humanities is designed to open the minds of students to the diverse peoples of the world and to encourage students to make connections across human experience.  Atticus Finch stated in To Kill A Mockingbird, “You never really understand a person, until you consider things from his perspective—until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”  Through writing, reading, listening, and speaking, students will “climb into” other perspectives to develop a thoughtful understanding of the world and those around them.
