8th Grade Spanish
Course Description
Spanish for 8th Graders is an interactive course designed to provide a rich learning environment where students feel more comfortable with communicating in the target language by expanding their knowledge of Spanish grammar and vocabulary and applying their oral, listening, reading, writing and comprehension skills in daily activities. It is a course with a multicultural focus that includes such activities as The Day of The Dead, the Mexico Trip, Spanish Immersion Program, and a Poetry Contest. Students will utilize technology in the classroom to complete diverse Spanish projects and once a week in the Spanish Classroom Lab, using the CD Rom, “Spanish Lab”, and working on activities from several websites. Each grammar or cultural unit is reinforced with educational videos and music to complement each topic. At the end of 8th Grade, students will have a functional proficiency in speaking in small conversations, applying vocabulary in oral presentations, continuing to improve oral skill throughout TPR stories, reading three TPR books, writing summaries, and improving their grammar skills. Students will be preparing for advanced Spanish classes in high school.
Philosophy
8th Grade Spanish class is an interactive course designed to provide a rich learning environment where students engage in learning a foreign language by participating in fun and exciting Spanish activities. It is important that each one of the students understands that learning Spanish requires practice, motivation, and an interest to successfully use Spanish on a daily basis. Although four hours of Spanish class time per week helps improve student language proficiency and language skills, it cannot provide enough practice time to become a fluent Spanish speaker. Therefore, students should practice using Spanish outside of the classroom. Each student has an individual process; consequently learning Spanish in the classroom requires a respectful and enriching environment where everybody can be safe to try, make mistakes, correct their mistakes, and continue moving their understanding of Spanish forward.
