Overview
The Visual and Performing Arts program includes Art and Media, Drama, Ceramics and Woodworking. Students are able to explore a variety of forms of creative expression. They have the opportunities to learn how to think, build, create and perform, building confidence in presentation of themselves and their ideas in a variety of artistic media.
Philosophy
The Visual and Performing Arts courses are designed to build skills and confidence as students explore creative thinking and expression through a wide variety of media. In addition to giving all students confidence and facility in the arts studied, all skills learned in visual and performing arts support other aspects of the academic experience including public speaking and presentation skills, critical thinking, information analysis, application of technology, construction skills and visual information processing. Exposure to a wide variety of creative forms allows students to discover their own personal strengths and preferences while developing facility in a wide variety of media. Visual and Performing Arts allows each student an opportunity to develop, hone and explore her own creative voice.
Art at GMS is not assessed. Feedback for students happens in class, encouraging students to push personal boundaries with challenges appropriate to their level of skill. Teachers and students all participate in creating a safe, supportive environment, freeing students to take creative risks and leap into new worlds of self-expression without fear. Students learn to trust their own intuition as well as utilize their evolving creative skills for effective expression of their ideas.
