Athletics at The Girls Middle School

All middle schools offer physical education and athletic sports. What's different about The Girls' Middle School? Our focus is on the special developmental needs of girls in these crucial years, when so many quit sports. Above all, we strive to balance:

  • Traditional and nontraditional sports
  • Competition and teamwork
  • Skill building and skill use

The sports program continues to grow, nurtured by Matt Cole, Athletic Director. Matt is a member of the Positive Coaching Alliance. A positive coach has two goals: winning and teaching life lessons. Girls have fun and learn teamwork and sportsmanship through the GMS athletic program.

Physical Education

PE is a mandatory part of the GMS curriculum. Our twice-a-week classes include traditional sports such as volleyball and softball as well as non-traditional sports such as skateboarding and lacrosse. Highlights of the rainy season include dance and self defense. Students are able to track their athletic improvement through fitness tests taken throughout the year and by following the length of time to run the mile each month.

Girls discover sports by playing games to learn the rules and techniques rather than practicing repetitive drills. This allows all girls to participate in every PE class and work as a team to help each other improve.

Competitive Sports

GMS fields teams in volleyball, basketball and soccer. We are a member of the Small School Intermediate League and compete with other local independent schools such as Charles Armstrong (Belmont), Sea Crest (Half Moon Bay), St. Matthew's (San Mateo) and Woodside Priory. Information on our league and all games is available on Sportability.

In keeping with our commitment to inclusion and participation, competitive sports at GMS are open to any girl who wants to and commits to playing. We have no tryouts or cuts. To accommodate the range of skill levels and abilities, we field multiple teams for all sports.

Skateboarding

The sport of skateboarding is growing by leaps and bounds, and at GMS we are proving that it is not only for boys. Girls have numerous opportunities to skateboard via the skate elective, skate unit in PE, and Friday lunch skate sessions. GMS has top of the line skateboards and safety equipment and even a small skateboard street course!

Girls learn teamwork and sportsmanship through the athletic program.
