Volunteering at The Girls' Middle School

Education is a family and friends affair. By giving time to The Girls' Middle School, you can engage with your own girl as well as with other families and friends, teachers, administration, board and the community. We ask that each girl's family commit to a baseline donation of 15 hours of time per girl per year and welcome additional time commitments from those who can and want to be more closely involved. In addition, friends, relatives and anyone who wants to participate in the mission of GMS are welcome to join our volunteer program.

How can you contribute time?

In a complex and varied curriculum such as ours, opportunities abound:

Intersession teachers If you aren't afraid to face a room full of smart, lively and eager learners, consider teaching a one-week intersession course. Past classes have run a gamut of subjects, from creative writing and aviation to folklore of India and catapult design. The only limits are your imagination and energy.
Drivers for field trips Unlike most public schools, our curriculum includes numerous local field trips, for example, an author's book signing at Hicklebee's Bookstore in San Jose or a trip to Don Edwards Wildlife Sanctuary to conduct scientific research. Volunteer drivers are essential to helping us continue these enrichment excursions.
Hot lunch program Volunteers staff and run our hot-lunch program. Grab an apron and help serve up catered vegetarian and non-vegetarian selections.
Coaches While we have a full-time athletics director, we also depend on volunteers to help with practices and drive girls to games. You don't have to be Landon Donovan to schlep a few soccer balls and spur on the next Brandi Chastain.
Parent Development Team While most of us are reluctant to ask for money, GMS' Parent Development Team makes this challenge a rewarding one. Learn more>>
Publications GMS is committed to consistent high-quality publications. We welcome those interested in and experienced with graphics, layout and editing.
Other Opportunities New volunteer needs come up from time to time. If you have some free time and want to help out, contact the Development Department.

"I didn't know that the world was such a big place, with so many different girls and opportunities. It's fun and exciting, especially because now I feel like I belong."
