The one-to-one laptop program gives GMS students immediate access to technology, allowing them to develop technical expertise, learn skills for acquiring and sharing information, and become confident in using computers.
Upon entering GMS, each sixth-grader is given a fully equipped laptop, which is hers to take with her when she graduates. While at GMS, students have a GMS e-mail account, a range of available software, and full hardware and software support. As they familiarize themselves with the capabilities of a computer, they enhance their skills in using technology for research, communication, shared projects, and classroom assignments. Teachers are able to communicate easily with their students through e-mail and network postings, and use the computer in the classroom for shared research activities.
Research studies have shown that students learn computer skills best when computer resources are across multiple subjects, not solely in computer science classes. At GMS, students use their laptops in all aspects of their classroom activities, from creating multimedia presentations to receiving audio feedback for Spanish pronunciation.
Through information literacy courses, students learn the proper techniques for conducting research and are introduced to age-appropriate online research resources and databases.
